The name of the district where the castle rises, comes from ’“Ayn as Jafat” (Fountain of Health).

After a free interpretation and sicilian transcription became “Ronnafuata” italianized in ‘Donnafugata’.

In the early seventeenth century, the fief of Donnafugata with its ancient watchtower, belonged to Guglielmo Bellio Cabrera, linked by kinship to the Counts of Modica.

In 1648, Vincenzo Arezzo bought the manor and obtained the investiture.

The original core of the building was completely transformed by the Arezzo Family: the work culminated when the baron Corrado Arezzo de Spucches (1824-1895) gave to the sumptuous villa (his rural residence) the current romantic image of a castle.

In 1992 the castle of Donnafugata was bought by the Municipality of Ragusa, after a restoration, reopened to the public.
